I think the diagonals work well on this tray. The client asked for fresh tones that reminded her of spring.
This beautiful bird is a juvenile, so has no crest. I tried to recreate his serenity and elegance. Lots of texture in the bill as his main feature. The lagoon is mirrored glass, with legs reflected within.

Christmas Star 2016
Fun choosing the brightest, shiniest of tesserae to really make this star shine! Black grout was effective but there are five shades of black background tiles which don't show up too well.
I chose wall tiles to create lots of texture in the petal clusters. The leaves are accentuated with light coming from below.
